This production list was compiled from a variety of sources: old registers published by Air Britain and LAAS, AB Archive & AB News, various current registration websites including those provided by the Australian, NZ and UK CAA's, also background from Rod Simpson's Airlife's General Aviation. It was also cross-checked in 2004 against a list on the Airtourer Association website, which was less complete but provided fates for several of the Australian cancellations. In early 2005, Noel Oxlade provided a lot of useful additional material, particularly resolving several queries about the early history of the Airtourers in Australia. A further update is thanks to Douglas Stott of the Airtourer Association in Australia. Also messages from several individual owners and aircraft enthusiasts.

BACKGROUND
The Airtourer was designed by Dr Henry Millicer of the Government Aircraft Factory in Australia, and won the UK Royal Aero Club design competition in 1952. A prototype was built by a group within the ULAA (later SAAA) amateur-builders association in Melbourne and this flew on 31 March 1959.
It was reworked with a metal structure for manufacture by Victa at Milperra, NSW in Australia from 1961 and 170 aircraft were built. In 1966 production was transferred to Aero Engine Services Ltd (AESL) at Hamilton in New Zealand and ceased in 1973 with a further 80 aircraft completed.
Victa also built the prototype of a four-seater variant called the CT/2 Aircruiser, designed by Dr Millicer, which flew in July 1966. This did not go into production, but went to AESL in 12/69 as development aircraft for the CT/4 Airtrainer.
AESL designed the CT/4 Airtrainer primarily for the military market, and manufacture started in 1973. AESL merged with Air Parts (NZ) Ltd (who built the Fletcher FU-24 agricultural aircraft) to become NZ Aerospace Industries (NZAI) in April 1973, and then Pacific Aerospace Corporation in July 1982. A further development was the introduction of the CT/4E turbine-engined model. The design continues to be available to special order with one completed in 12/08, see separate Airtrainer page.
The Airtourer Association was founded in August 1977 to represent owners and operators, and those interested in the preservation and continued airworthiness of the marque. Its coverage has since been extended to cover Airtrainers as well. See: http://www.airtourer.asn.au.
To guarantee the future, the Association formed the Airtourer Cooperative Ltd at Hoxton Park Airfield. This acquired the manufacturing rights along with jigs, documentation and spares inventory from NZAI in 1980. It continues to provide primary spares support for the marque. It now holds the Type Certificates for all models of Airtourer made in both Australia and NZ. See: http://www.airtourer.asn.au/cooperative.htm.
While continuing its spares activities, the Cooperative licenced the rights to manufacture new aircraft to Millicer Aircraft Industries Ltd in 1998. This company ceased trading in late 2000.
Edge Aviation at West Sale acquired the manufacturing rights from the Millicer company (see report in Air Britain Digest Summer 2002). They modified as an existing Airtourer 100 VH-PUR c/n 138 as a prototype, with a 160 hp Lycoming engine and incorporating several new detail features. This flew in August 2001 and is still owned by Edge. They were reported also to have used Airtrainer VH-CTU c/n 036 for development testing. Production was not proceeded with and the rights have reverted to the Cooperative.
As well as the Airtourer, Victa also built one other aircraft. This was the prototype of Victa R101 Gyroplane VH-MVB which flew in 1962. It did not go into production, and was donated to the Camden Museum of Aviation, NSW in July 1967.

Built by Aero Engine Services Ltd (AESL), Hamilton NZ (c/n 501-580) AESL introduced the following model designations, including rebuilds of some Victa-built aircraft above. T1 = as Victa design with
100 hp Continental O-200 engine (none built by AESL) Several aircraft have been modified with more powerful engines than those originally installed, up to 180 hp. Some for export were test flown in NZ without being registered, using the c/n as identity. Those shipped to Glosair at Staverton in the U.K. were marketed as the Glos-Airtourer. Some of these were stored for up to three years before re-assembly. |
